Can’t Open xlsx Excel Spreadsheets using Outlook 2007

Scenario
Lenovo W510 running Windows 7 64 bit laptop
Office 2007 installed
When attempted to open Excel attachments ending with xlsx extensions (xls atachments opened fine) they would not open
Solution
Open Control Panel
Open Default Programs
Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program
Scrow down to .xlsx
check current Default, if Microsoft Office Component or Microsoft Outlook Component change to Microsoft Office Excel
This fixed the problem

NOTE: Prior to this error
I was getting the following error when attempting to open the XLSX attachment within Outlook:
%1 is not a valid win 32 application
The fix was to run updates from Outlook 2007 (from Outlook Inbox viiew: Help-Check for Updates; Run all pending updates including Office 2007 SP2 if available)
Reboot and this issue should disappear

Also: the error: This is not a valid Win 32 bit applciation when trying to open can be addressed by fixing the file association issue as described above

Finally: The following steps were tried and although they did not fix the original problem (opening a xlsx attachment within Outlook 2007)
they helped me troubleshoot the problem:

Uninstalled Office 2007 and reinstalled office 2007 (did not fix problem; conclusion: not the root cause of the issue)
Performed Office 2007 SP2 and all other MS office and Outlook 2007 updates (did not fix problem; conclusion: not the root cause of the issue)
Enable two Excel add ons: Analysis tool Pack and Analysis tool Pack VBA (did not fix problem; conclusion: not the root cause of the issue)
