Configuring D-link dir-655 with a Comcast modem – 6 important points to remember

I just installed a D-Link DIR655 wireless router for a client and noted that you need to keep in mind a few important things:
Note: These issues popped out when I configured the router using the “Wizard” option

First, By default the IP address of the router is 192.168.0.1

2nd: By default, the admin password is blank

3rd: You need to find out what are the DNS servers used by Comcast. You are going to be asked that question during the wizard setup, so be prepared (e.g.: In Atlanta, GA these are the two DNS servers IPs: 68.87.68.166 and 68.87.74.166). See below a chart with these DNS servers IPs as of May 22nd, 2011

4th: Clone the MAC address of the computer you are using (The wizard will tell you to use the same computer you used to install your previous router, since it has the original MAC address cloned, but in most cases you are not using the original computer anyway, so you rarely know what your old computer’s MAC address is; so don’t worry just clone the MAC of the computer you are using now.

5th You are also asked to enter a new password to access the router. Make sure you do (and make sure you write the password name, so you won’t forget when you need to change the settings)

6th Eventually, You are going to configure the wireless network by clicking on the Wireless Settings option; Just follow the screens which are pretty well self explained, but basically you need to enter the SSID (the name of your network as it will show up in the list of available networks) and the encryption key (or like some say: the wireless password)

I hope this helps.
