Defining some new acronyms in the cloud era – DaaS, IaaS, PaaS and SaaS

Starting with the word Cloud lets see some interesting cloud definitions:

1. Cloud is the next stage in the evolution of the internet (HP)
2. Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product (wikipedia)
3. Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that’s often used to represent the Internet in flowcharts and diagrams. ( TechTarget )
4. Cloud computing lets you use files and applications over the Internet ( howstuffworks or HSW ). According to HSW, Cloud Computing architecture has a front end (users, client devices, and user applications such web browsers and programs) and back end (the various computers, servers and data storage systems used in the background)
The front end and the back end connect to each other through a network, usually the Internet.

You must have heard or seen the Acronyms:

SaaS, IaaS, DaaS, PaaS. What are they? Here are some definitions

DaaS (1): Data as a Service. It is based on the concept that the product, data in this case, can be provided on demand to the user regardless of geographic or organizational separation of provider and consumer. Don’t confuse with DaaS (Datacenter as a service) which is the name of a company that provides Data Center services to its clients

DaaS (2): Desktop as a Service: This is a virtualized version of your physical desktop computer. Imagine you are not home, traveling and all you have is an Ipad. If you have Daas, You can access your virtual desktop from your Ipad and run all your apps, get your data and work as if you were in front of your home computer. Your desktop now resides on the cloud. You will never need to replace another hard drive, add more memory, attach devices to it. Everything is on the cloud! The only caveat: You need a Internet connection! (WIFI via broadband connection (DSL or cable service) , Satellite Internet Service, a hotspot connection, cellular services, etc). You virtual desktop resides in a data center is in charge of backing up your desktop and thousands of others desktops who share the same blade servers where they usually stored. Some people also call this a VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) solution. Finally some DaaS evangelists use the word DaaD (desktop as a Device) to contrast the two ways computing is accomplished: as a Service (cloud computing) or as a Device (home or office physical computer)

IaaS: Infrastructure as a Service: cloud providers offer computers – as physical or more often as virtual machines –, raw (block) storage, firewalls, load balancers, and networks. IaaS providers supply these resources on demand from their large pools installed in data centers.

PaaS: Platform as a service. In the PaaS model, cloud providers deliver a computing platform and/or solution stack typically including operating system, programming language execution environment, database, and web server. Application developers can develop and run their software solutions on a cloud platform without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software layers

We will be adding more “…as a Service” as they are being created over time
