Testing a connection to a SQL Database using a SQL.udl file


This is a quick tip on how to test a connection to a SQL Database to validate the credentials or to validate if the FQDN or the hostname is correct

 

  1. Open Notepad
  2. Click File – Save
  3. Under Save as Type change to all files
  4. for the filename enter sql.udl and click SAVE
  5. Close Notepad
  6. Go to the Desktop and double click SQL.UDL
  7. The following screen pops up:

8. Enter the hostname or the FQDN of the server AND the credentials and click on Test Connection

That is it! Good luck!
